I recently found a Civil War pension application submitted by Caroline Paul, widow of James H. Paul. The app. states that he served in Co. C and H of the 34th Ohio Infantry. The application was submitted in April 1884, in Arkansas.
Tim,
Where did you find the pension application for James H. Paul? Is it online?
Carolyn
Carolyn,
I found it online in the databases of Ancestry.com. I have not yet been able to find any other confirmation of this James.
I looked on Footnote.com. I found the same basic record, but no details. I would sure like to know more about him. I’m going to try to put the index card up as an image.
Carolyn
I can’t make a certain connection just yet, but.. My grandfather’s grandfather was James H. Paul. He married a woman named Caroline Young(nee Leming) in Kentucky in about 1868. In 1880 they owned a big tract of farm land in Lawrence County Arkansas. It is unclear when, or how James died But Caroline is remarried in 1886, and living in Phelps County Missouri. I have recently been told by a cousin that She moved and sold the land in Arkansas after James died because she couldn’t pay the taxes or run the farm herself. The information on the pension application fits my James and Caroline very well, but I haven’t figured out a way to prove it is the same James.
