It’s so exciting to be hearing from so many Paul families. Some of you have sent information to me via the Paul-Roots list and I’ve posted it for you. That’s fine.
Even better – add your information directly into the blog. Just click on “Comments” at the bottom of any post – including this one…

My mother is a Paul, Her father was Lewis Earl Paul, born 6 March 1918 in Newburg, Missouri. His parents were Charles Taylor Paul, and Loretta Morse. Charles Taylor Paul was born 11 Feb 1870 in Foster, Kentucky. His death certificate lists James Paul as his father, his mother was Caroline Leming, of Ohio. I have no further information.
I am researching my family history and came across this site about the SS Ivernia 1905. My Great Grandfather was a steward on board this vessel in 1905 his name was James W Holden from Hereford Herefordshire England he was 43 years old.
I’m researching my family history and my Great-great Grandmother was Sarah ‘Sary’ Paul b. Mar 1824 in North Carolina. She married Martin Corbin 15 Aug 1844 in Georgia.
She might be of native american heritage. I would like any information on her parents or siblings.
Thank you.
In my quest for info regarding the family “Paul”, I was shocked to see how many of us there are!!! However, I have found mostly Anglo-American Pauls through my internet searches. I simply want you all to know that there is a Latin branch of the family as well, which is LARGE and from whom most if not all Pauls (in all its flavors, i.e. Paulus, Pau, Powell, Paulson, etc…) descend from. Now a bit about my family.
We emigrated from Romania in October 1989. As I grew older I grew more interested in my family and its history. I couldn’t find much on my mothers side; going back only to my grandmother which was adopted and never knew her parents. She did keep her given name and the oldest account I’ve found of that name was in Spain about 2000 years ago. Nevertheless, I knew I’d have much better luck with my dads family (the Pauls) mostly because a good chunk of them kept showing/telling me about places where this and that ancestor did this and that…. My branch ended up in Romania in the early 1800’s. The first Paul of my family to take up residence in Romania was a soldier in Napoleons army. Either during the offensive or during the retreat he was injured and somehow he ended up in northwest Romania. He married a local, learned the language and became a teacher. A family member has his papers and everything that he left behind as well as subsequent family information. Without speaking French I did a few searches into the databases they have available and it does seem legit. It would be illogical to try to list my ancestors from Romania as almost all of them had ten to 12 children starting with the first one. I personally keep in touch with 15 of my cousins and uncles: there are just too many to keep up with. Speaking of the French origin of my family, about seven years ago my father, a small business owner was talking with a customer that had an accent as bad as his own! What was more they looked like family. So my father asks him where he’s from and the man says that originally from France but living in the US now. It turns out that his family name was Paul. My dad was never interested in his background but this seemed too good to be true and since I was already pestering him with questions about family lineage, he asked the man if any of his family members ever talked about taking part in the Russian adventure. He said that there were Pauls that took part in it and some did not return, never to be heard of again. I didn’t learn much more from him except to try the national archives and to get local as a lot of personal information is housed in local libraries, churches, city councils.
As of now, I am still looking for the original branch of the family in France, slow going as I have to work as well and I’m a sailor which at times interrupts my inquiries by up to six months. And the *&%$#####$%$^&%^% French have most of their archives in French only which slows me down quite a bit.
Anyway, for a conclusion, I wanted to let all you Pauls out there that for one, I am 100% the family is of Roman origins, and two, there are many of us in the world so it will be very difficult to find out information fast. But keep at it whenever you have time and even submit DNA samples to specialized labs that do genealogy work. I’ll be submitting my sample before the year is out.
Ok I’m done babbling. Bye!
I am just starting to do some research on my dad, William
Alvah Paul. I know he was born in New Orleans, LA on May 3, 1919. My sister just informed me that his dad was a college professor and his mom was a music teacher. I was completely unaware of this because his mom died in childbirth and his father drank himself to death from grief(or so she said that my aunt said). He was raised by a paternal (?) aunt that I know only by “Auntie”, in Hattiesburg, MS. My father’s brother’s wife did an in-depth family history, but she has passed away and after my mom remarried, she wasn’t too interested in my dad’s history. All that to say that if anyone out there has any kind of info, I would so appreciate it. I am waiting for my grandmother’s death certificate to find out what my grandfather’s first name was. So sad that I don’t know that.
